Valstybės ir Tautiškos Giesmės Diena - Cepelinai From Lithuania

The "Statehood and National Anthem Day" is one of the official National Holidays in Lithuania, celebrated annually on July 6. It commemorates the coronation of Lithuania's first and only king, Karalius Mindaugas, in 1253, as well as its national anthem.

Despite some disputes as to the accuracy of the date, July 6 has been an official Lithuanian national holiday since 1991. Lithuanians celebrate the anniversary with a series of cultural activities, including operas, folk music concerts, folk dance performances, parades, and festivals.

Lithuanian cuisine features products suited to the cool and moist northern climate of Lithuania: barley, potatoes, rye, beets, greens, berries, and mushrooms are locally grown, and dairy products are one of its specialties. Various ways of pickling were used to preserve food for winter. Soups are extremely popular, and are widely regarded as the key to good health.

Cepelinai, Lithuania's national dish, are large dumplings made of a mixture of raw and cooked potato dough filled with pork and doused in a ladle of a sour cream and bacon sauce. Though originally called Didzkukuliai, the name was changed to Cepelinai in the 20th century because of their resemblance to zeppelin airships.

It is believed that cepelinai have German origins and are based on Kartoffelknödel. There are many versions of the dish, and similar dumplings can be found in many other countries nearby.
