Dan Državnosti and the Carnolian Honeybee in Slovenia

The Slovenian Statehood Day (Dan državnosti) is a public holiday in Slovenia to commemorate the country's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia 30 years ago, on June 25, 1991.

We continue to celebrate the National Days of our member Nations in 2021 by introducing one of our staff members and unveiling some facts. Interesting, surprising, fascinating, amazing, extraordinary fun facts, usually not found in any travel guides.

Did you know that one of every 200 Slovenians is a beekeeper?

Slovenia is the home of the Carniolan honeybee (Apis Mellifera Carnica), an autochthonous bee, which is considered one of the most widespread honeybee species in the world.
With an overall population of two million and a surprising total number of 11,000 beekeepers, Slovenia's average is about four times as high as in the whole European Union. The beekeeping tradition is rich and strongly rooted in people's consciousness.
