Discover Ulm's Unique Cultural Heritage: The Schwörmontag Celebration

ULM, Germany - Since 2018, the city of Ulm in Baden-Württemberg has proudly hosted the Joint Support and Enabling Command (JSEC). This vibrant metropolis, nestled between Stuttgart and Munich, is renowned not only for being the birthplace of Albert Einstein but also for the iconic Ulm Minster, boasting the tallest church spire in the world. For JSEC personnel and their families who have made Ulm their home, the city offers a wealth of attractions and cultural experiences. One of the most significant events in Ulm's annual calendar is the Schwörmontag, a unique tradition celebrated with great enthusiasm by the entire community.

What is Schwörmontag?

Schwörmontag, or "Oath Monday," is held on the penultimate Monday in July and stands as the pinnacle of Ulm’s cultural festivities. It marks a day of civic pride and historical significance, during which the Mayor of Ulm delivers the annual Schwörrede (oath speech). This tradition symbolizes the beginning and end of Ulm's political year, preceding the city council's summer recess.

The Schwörmontag Ceremony

The ceremony is a momentous occasion in Ulm. Each year, the Mayor addresses the citizens from the balcony of the Schwörhaus (Oath House), recounting the past year's developments and achievements. Following this, the Mayor raises his right hand and recites the ancient Schwörformel (oath formula). The oath pledges to serve the community—both rich and poor—fairly and justly, without any reservations, invoking divine assistance in this duty. This pledge, rooted in a tradition dating back at least six and a half centuries, reflects the community spirit that defines Ulm. The first recorded instance of this ceremony is believed to have occurred in 1345, emphasizing its deep historical roots.

Festivities and Traditions

Schwörmontag is more than just a political ceremony; it is a city-wide celebration filled with various events that bring the community together. The festivities kick off on the Saturday before Schwörmontag with a spectacular Lichterserenade (Light Serenade), where approximately 12,000 lights transform the Danube River into a dazzling display of colors. This mesmerizing sight, accompanied by live music, sets the tone for the upcoming celebrations.

One of the highlights is the Nabada, a local term meaning "down the river." This event sees thousands of Ulmers and visitors taking to the Danube in elaborately decorated boats and rafts, creating a carnival-like atmosphere on the water. The Nabada embodies the community’s joy and creativity, making it a must-see spectacle for all attendees.
