Future NATO Exercises are planned at JSEC in Ulm

ULM, Germany - NATO conducts multi-domain, realistic and challenging exercises in order to train how to safeguard one billion citizens. For this reason, JSEC was proud to host the SHAPE J7 MTEP Planning Conference. Over three days, training entities from all NATO Headquarters were developing future exercises that demonstrate Alliance cohesion and promote cooperation and coordination across the Euro-Atlantic area.

JSEC Deputy Chief of Staff Plans, Major General Gerry Ewart-Brookes, welcomed the participants: "This meeting as the first in a row will set the resources and requirements for conducting the NATO exercise programme." Especially the new focus on Enablement will shape future challenges in NATO exercises.

It is great, that JSEC is hosting us and we always have great support from JSEC in any meeting

“The purpose of the conference was to review the training requirements from 2025 to 2028 and to start resourcing them”, Colonel Vincent Saint Denis, Branch Head Training of Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. The organizer of the event emphasized: "It is great, that JSEC is hosting us and we always have great support from JSEC in any meeting. The Command is a unique enabler and part of every exercise we organize. Enablement is one of the first priorities for Supreme Allied Commander Europe for preparing forces to operate and this is the reason, why we wanted to run this conference here."

In three connected events the participants from NATO headquarters and forces developed the Military Training and Exercise Programme (MTEP) for the Allied troops over the following years. The first Planning Board focused on providing strategic level guidance to the stakeholders, continuing the preparation of the first draft of the programme for the 2024 to 2027 cycle and identifying training requirements. Additionally, the Exercise Budget Users Group focused on updating the allocation of resources for the Medium Term Resource Plan process.

It will improve the synergies already generated and enhance the required interoperability between Allies

NATO exercises are planned years in advance and underpin Defence and Deterrence through dialogue and transparency. General Ewart-Brookes underlined the close involvement and contribution of JSEC to different exercises: "It will improve the synergies already generated and enhance the required interoperability between allies."

NATO is conducting several exercises with deep involvement of JSEC in the deployment of forces across Europe. The next big milestone for JSEC in these series of exercises is Steadfast Defender 2024 which will demonstrate our capability and readiness to coordinate large-scale force deployment across the Atlantic and through Europe.
