Discussing aspects of Enablement on Munich Security Conference

ULM, Germany - On 15 February, the Joint Support and Enabling Command organized a side-event at the Munich Security Conference (MSC 25). Under the label "A Conversation on Military Mobility", a panel of high-level experts discussed the challenges that the Alliance faces in Enabling SACEUR's area of responsibility.

Working on enablement is urgent and must be done now, before potential crises occur

The core question that was addressed concerned how to ensure that military deployments can take place at speed and at scale, to deter and defend Allied territory. General (retired) Ben Hodges, a former commander of US Army Europe and the NATO senior mentor for logistics, moderated the discussion, with panelists Angus Lapsley (NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defense Plans & Policy), Magda Kopczynska (EU Director General for Mobility & Transport), and General Kai Rohrschneider, Commander of the Joint Support and Enabling Command.

Many topics were discussed, including raising awareness how Enablement underpins deterrence, how to better leverage a whole-of-society approach where other ministries and companies are involved and how to ensure that nations invest more in dual-use infrastructure and enablers. General Rohrschneider emphasized the importance of exercising Enablement – rather than just enabling exercises – and added: "Working on Enablement is urgent, and must be done now, before potential crises occur."
