Ulm, Germany -
On 24 March 2023, the Deputy Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Lieutenant General Lance Landrum, and NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning, Mr. Angus Lapsley, visited NATO’s Joint Support and Enabling Command (JSEC) in Ulm, Germany. The visit represented an important occasion to delve deeper into the operational headquarters’ demanding mission – rapidly and seamlessly moving NATO forces to and across Europe.
We are ready to coordinate the preparation and execution of Enablement, Reinforcement by Forces and Sustainment to contribute to Deter and Protect.
While at JSEC, Lieutenant General Landrum and Assistant Secretary Lapsley met with its Commander, Lieutenant General Sollfrank, and other distinguished military officials. Thanks to an in-depth briefing, participants had the opportunity to better understand JSEC’s capabilities as well as its critical role in supporting NATO's operational readiness.
Lieutenant General Sollfrank noted that JSEC relies on “the 3E-Approach is crucial for us to achieve our objectives. Effective – Efficient – Enablement”, adding that, “we plan, create and manage. We are ready to coordinate the preparation and execution of Enablement, Reinforcement by Forces and Sustainment to contribute to Deter and Protect.”

On his end, Mr Lapsley commended the Commander for JSEC’s essential work at such a critical time for the Alliance. “We are working hard on delivering a full spectrum of decisions, to strengthen our deterrence and defence ahead of the Vilnius Summit. This includes, of course, posture, plans and capabilities. But what comes back to us over and over again is Enablement and Sustainment”, he explained. “JSEC is the centre of expertise here”, he went on to say, “that’s why this is the perfect time to come here and have personal talks. Thanks for having us”.
In the same spirit, Lieutenant General Landrum aptly noted how “the ability to rapidly reinforce our posture and sustain our forces is critical for NATO’s deterrence and defence.” “NATO relies on its member nations to contribute to their deployment and sustainment plans, forces and transportation infrastructure in this endeavour”, he said, highlighting that “JSEC’s leadership and coordination are key to our own success”.

Supporting NATO’s operational readiness by accelerating, coordinating, and safeguarding the movement of allied follow-on forces across European borders, whenever required.
This key message was also echoed by Lieutenant General Janusz Adamczak, Director General of the NATO International Military Staff, who visited JSEC last week. “My visit to JSEC offered an important opportunity to further discuss the critical role it plays in supporting NATO’s operational readiness by accelerating, coordinating, and safeguarding the movement of allied follow-on forces across European borders, whenever required”, he underlined.
